Juanita Anderson Allen, 39 of 260 Dewey Robinson Road passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013 at her residence. She is the daughter of Jim and Dorothy Green. She was a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by her husband Will Crews; daughter, Rachel Allen; son, Aaron Allen; step-daughter, Jazmine Crews; brothers; Tony Baldridge, Robert William and Keith Anderson and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Paint Fork Baptist Church. The Rev. Ronnie Robinson and Rev. Eugene Dodd will officiate. Burial will follow in the Radford Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Emmett Sprinkle Sams, 92, of 933 Bailey Street. passed away at his residence Tuesday, April 2, 2013. He was a resident of Madison County and the son of the late Thomas Fuller and Lela Mae Sprinkle Sams and husband of the late Violet Graham Sams. Mr. Sams is also preceded in death by a sister Julia Willoree Sams and brother T. F. Sams. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Sams graduated from Bald Creek High School, Mars Hill Jr. College and Western Carolina. He received his Masters from George Peabody College for Teachers. He taught in public schools in Yancey and Madison Counties for six years. Mr. Sams retired in 1992 from Mars Hill College as a professor of mathematics after 46 years. On March 25, 2013, Mars Hill College conferred upon Mr. Sams the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Ellis and Paula Manning and husband George; granddaughters, Stephanie Rebecca and Melissa Ann Ellis and Laura Jean Manning; sister Wanda Sams Winecoff; brother Jacob Alfred Sams and a large extended family. The family will receive friends 4 – 7:00pm Friday, April 5, 2013 at Blue Ridge Funeral Service. The family will have a private prayer gathering at 2:00pm Saturday, April 6 at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, with a private family graveside following at Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles Franklin Emery, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Mission Hospital/St. Joseph’s Campus. A native of Noeton, TN, Charles was the son of the late Benjamin and Nettie Collett Emory. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: J. R., Jackie, and Carroll Emory; and three sisters: Harriett King, Opal Styles and Bobbie Bryan. Mr. Emery was a retired long distance truck driver. He enjoyed fishing, Nascar racing and country music. Mr. Emery is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bailey Emery; daughters: Pam Emery of Troutman, NC and Sharon Emory Pelkey of Plumas Lake, CA; a brother, Bill Emory of Weaverville; four grandchildren: Benjamin Charles Morrison, Jason and Jeremy Pelkey, and Crystal Pelkey Dukes; four great-grandchildren: Tyler Dukes, Tristan, Lilli and Iris Pelkey; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at Ivy Hill Baptist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Worth Emory will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mable P. Ammons, 85, of 7041 Hwy 213, passed away, April 13, 2013 at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation. She was a lifelong resident of Madison County and the daughter of the late Vernie and Bonnie Shook Peek. Mrs. Ammons was a member of Peeks Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by a brother Hershel Peek. She is survived by husband Okley Ammons, daughters Sheila Ammons of Weaverville and Patty Ammons of Cary, NC, son Dale Ammons of East Greenbush, NY; sisters Monell Bryan and Anna Jo Robinson; and brother Tarshel Peek. Wilma Waldrup, 68, of 226 Sugar Creek Rd., passed away April 13, 2013 at Mission Hospital. She was the daughter of the late William C. and Elizabeth Allman Jordan. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Harley Waldrup, son Jason Waldrup, sister Linda Brunner and brother William Arthur Jordan. James “Jim” Clyde Carter, 80, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013. Jim was born on January, 30, 1933 in Henderson County. He attended school in Madison County and graduated from Mars Hill High School in 1952. He retired from Micro Switch after many years of employment. Jim was a long time member of California Creek Baptist Church and he was most recently a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Mars Hill. Jim was a man of few words, who made the ones he did speak matter, and they were never words of complaint. He enjoyed watching sports (especially the Braves), visiting over a cup of cappuccino, and good Southern gospel music. He was a faithful and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his father Clarence Edward Carter and sister, Ruby Wallin. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Jo Carter; his mother, Georgia Mullinax Carter; brother, Edward Carter; 5 children, Diane Phillips (Doug), Jane Huffman, Charlene Davenport (Keith), Tina Carter, Chris Carter (Dana); 5 grandchildren, Amanda Jenkins(Josh), Brandie Huffman, Rachel Phillips, Mary Jo and Bailee Carter; 2 great-grandchildren, Emily and Sarah Jenkins; brother-in-law, Harold Wallin; also, many cousins, nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 29, at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, Mars Hill, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park in Weaverville, NC. Betty McNeil, 84, passed away May 26, 2013, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital in Greeneville,TN. Betty was born July 15th, 1928 in Mars Hill, NC. She graduated from Sand Hill High School in 1945 and Mars Hill College in 1947. She was an avid golfer with four hole-in-ones and was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Greeneville, Tn. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Willard Duck and Vertie Duck; her first husband of 53 years, Robert McElrath; a son, Rick McElrath; 2 sisters, Lois Randolph and Lucille Duckett; 3 brothers, Owen Duck, Dr. Otis Duck and W.B. Duck. Betty is survived by her husband Sam McNeil; daughter, Robin McElrath; 6 grandchildren, Bryan Sangid and wife Whitney, Hannah Sangid Fair and husband Steven, Michael Sangid, Geoff McElrath and wife T bitha, Morgan McElrath Bridges and husband Jimmy, Jesse McElrath Schwall and husband Danny, as well as six great grandchildren. No formal visitation will be held. A private family service will be held at 2:00 pm, May 27th for close friends and family, at Greenelawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Greeneville, Tennessee. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Laughlin Memorial Hospital on 4 East Wing, Caris Healthcare and Dr. Brad Strange for their excellent care and kindness toward Betty and her family. Roger Dale Ponder, 62 passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Charles George VA Medical Center. He was born in Madison County to the late Stanley and Rellie Ponder Hollifield. He is also preceded in death by two brothers Houston Ponder, brother-in-law Kyle Begley. He was employed with Hayes and Lunsford and was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church. He was a US Army Veteran. Surviving are his wife Mary Lou Lunsford Ponder of the home, daughter Mary Daniela Benson and husband Jacob, son Darryll Ponder and wife Shian, sisters; Ruby and husband Roy Shepherd, Doris Begley, brothers; Rev. Bill Ponder and wife Brenda, Harlon Ponder and wife Frances, Rev. James (Nelson) and wife Sharon Ponder, Mike Ponder and wife Lynda, sister-in-law Kay Ponder, grandchildren; Meghan Ponder, Loreali and Lane Benson, and several nieces and nephews. Auburn Wyatt

Auburn Everett Wyatt, 96, of Marshall, died Monday, June 3, 2013 at Madison Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Madison County, he was born on January 23, 1917, first child of Reuben Wesley and Italy Cody Wyatt. Auburn “Doc’s” place of birth, and his permanent place of residence all of his life, was on Cody Road in the Petersburg Community. He was the oldest member of Grapevine Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Auburn was preceded in death by his wife, Zula Ann Hensley Wyatt who died November 21, 2012; two sisters, Ruby W. Ramsey and Ava W. Buckner and three brothers, Herschel, Oakley and Truman Wyatt.
Mr. Wyatt is survived by two sons, David Wyatt and his wife Willa and Elsberry Wyatt; three grandchildren Jane Wyatt Maney and her husband Chris, Clark Wesley Wyatt and his wife Katy and Austin Reuben Wyatt and his wife Bethany; five great grandchildren, Jake, Jesse and Ben Wyatt, sons of Clark and Katy; Carrie Ann Maney, daughter of Jane and Chris and Hudson Wyatt, son of Austin and Bethany; brother Donald Wyatt; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of former students.
Auburn attended Center Elementary School and graduated from Marshall High School, Mars Hill College and Western Carolina Teachers’ College with plans to become a teacher. After graduating from college his plans changed somewhat and he moved to Virginia to work in the naval shipyards and then on to Dearborn, Michigan where he was employed with Dearborn Inn and Ford Motor Company. While working as a waiter in the dining room of the Dearborn Inn he had the distinct honor of serving Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and Charles Lindbergh. Following his work at Dearborn Inn he worked for Ford Motor Company at Willow Run Plant.
Following his work “up north”, Auburn came back home and began teaching school in the Sandy Mush Community of Madison County. From there he taught at Foster’s Creek School in the Upper Laurel Community of Madison County and Marshall High School. Auburn was a principal of Ebbs Chapel School and Walnut High School. After working 35 years in the Madison County Schools, he retired in 1978. Following his retirement, Auburn kept busy farming, raising beef cattle, bee keeping and advising his grandchildren. Daily, Mr. Wyatt read his Bible and studied from his Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.
Auburn’s funeral service will be Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service, 7626 Highway 213, Mars Hill, NC, with Dr. Tommy Justus and Rev. Doctor Harry Culbertson, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with a reception at Mars Hill Baptist Church Reception Hall. The family will receive friends at Blue Ridge Funeral Service from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday.

Pearl Elizabeth Rice Buckner,77 of 67 Sam Fox Rd.. passed away Sunday June 2, 2013. She was a resident of Buncombe County and daughter of the late Kellie and Elda Greene Rice. She is also preceded in death by her brothers Carl and Richard Rice. Ms. Buckner was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by daughters, Joyce Fox and husband Sam of Mars Hill, Linda Lumston and husband David of Swannanoa, and Diane Raines of Burnsville; grandchildren, Michael Coates and wife Cindy, David Buckner and wife Carlene, Jason Fox and Tiffany Donaldson; five great grandchildren; a brother Willard Rice and Grace of Asheville.
Memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Locust Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev.D. Harry Culbertson, Jr. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, 4:30-5:00 prior to the service at the church.

Rev. Elbert Jenkins

Rev. Elbert Wayne “Eb” Jenkins, 81 of 2970 Laurel Valley Road, Mars Hill, N. C. left this earthly life to be with his Heavenly Father on May 23, 2013. He is now rejoicing in Heaven.
Eb was born on September 7, 1931 in Madison County. He was the son of the late John and Edis Wheeler Jenkins. He was a loving husband, father and humble servant of the Lord. He loved spreading God’s word with everyone he met.
During his lifetime he pastored numerous churches including; Arrington Branch Baptist Church, Ivy Gap Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served for thirty-three years, Laurel Bend Baptist Church and California Creek Baptist Church. He also did mission work in Idaho and Nevada as well as in China, India and spent a month in Africa. He loved traveling and made several trips to the Holy Land. He retired from Farm Bureau Insurance Co. in 1993 after more than thirty years.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Wanda Lee Jenkins, brother Clay Jenkins, brother and sister-in-law Ed and Madeline Coddington Jenkins, sister-in-law Maggie Peek Jenkins, nephews Johnny and Ricky Jenkins and son-in-law Bill Arndt.
Eb is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Glada Fender Jenkins, daughter Joy and husband Jimmy Ramsey, son Danny and wife Colleen Jenkins of Weaverville, son Harvey and Silvio Maura of Asheville, daughter Ruth Arndt of Murrells Inlet, S. C., daughter Lisa Lawrence of Weaverville, brother Jasper Jenkins, sister Jessie Whitt and husband Dick, sister-in-law, Leakie Whitt Jenkins, grandchildren; Stacy Ramsey, John Jenkins, Dallie and Maggie Lawrence and great grandson Trenton Ramsey.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 2:30 pm at Upper Laurel Baptist Church with Rev. Cline Hensley Jr., Rev. Worth Emory and Rev. Kenneth Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, May 25, 2013 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, Mars Hill, NC. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Lucille Ava Hensley McKinney, 86, of 510 Sprinkle Creek Rd. died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Annetta Metcalf Hensley and step daughter of the late Burla Ray Hensley. Mrs. McKinney is also preceded in death by sisters, Leila Ray, Ceile Ramsey, and Elise Hensley; brothers Leo, Junior and Johnny Hensley. She is a member of Little Ivy Baptist Church and was a former employee of Micro Switch Manufacturing Co.
Surviving are her husband, Clyde McKinney; daughters Ann Blankenship (Johnny Clyde) and Betty Gail Carroll( Kevin); son Harold McKinney; sisters, Gladys English and Helen Norwood (Bill); brothers Robert Hensley (Kathleen) and Charles Hensley. She is also survived by a grandson Jason Ezkiel McKinney (Jennifer) and two great grandchildren; Tucker and Chastity McKinney.
The funeral service will be held Friday May 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Officiating will be Rev. Billy Murray and Rev. Rotha Wilson. Doris Jean Rich Fisher, 77, of 1787 Metcalf Creek Loop Rd. passed away Wednesday May 15, 2013. She was a lifelong resident of Madison County and daughter of the late Hubert and Jean Hamlin Rich. She is also preceded in death by her husband Roy O. Fisher, sister Damaris Propst and brother J. C. Rich. Mrs. Fisher was a member of Beech Glen Baptist Church.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by daughters, Belinda Putnam, Mary Alice Huskins, Martha Fisher; brother Ronald Rich; grandchildren, Heather Burgess , Brandon and Tyler Fisher and four great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Stanley Peek will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 10:00–11:00 a.m at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service.

Voyt “Shorty” Shelton, 72, of North Fork Rd. passed away June 6, 2013 with complications from pneumonia. Shorty was born April 15, 1941 to the late Hubert and Onia Edwards Shelton. Shorty had been a truck driver for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lavon; daughter, Rebecca; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Derrick; two great- grandchildren Leah and Jacob; two sisters, Susie and Evelyn; two brothers, Cecil and Foye; numerous nieces and nephews.

Rev. Anderson Burton Coffey ,79 of 318 Horace Rice Rd went to be with his Lord, Sunday, June 9, 2013. He was a son of the late Posey Jerome and Elizabeth Griffin Coffey. Anderson loved the Lord and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He had been a pastor since 1976, and was a member of Union Chapel Baptist Church. He retired from NC Department of Transportation working in the bridge division. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his son; David Jerome Coffey, sisters; Claire, Lilly, Ada, Pearl, Viola, Gertrude and Loraine, brothers; Carroll, Frank, and James.

Surviving is his wife of 63 years Girtha Gunter Coffey, daughter; Mary Ann Coffey, sons; Charles Coffey Sr.(Jackie) , Freddie Coffey and Ronnie Coffey (Cindy) , Grandchildren; Jeremy (Charlita), Charles Jr. (Amanda), Scotty and Wendi Coffey, Great-grandchildren; Colton, Chloe, Blake and Peyton Coffey and Logan Campbell, sisters; Meredith Wilburn, Esther Bailey, Evelyn Hatton, brothers; Floyd and Leonard Coffey, several nieces and nephews.

Earl Grey “E.G.” Hill, Jr. 80, of 821 Crooked Creek Rd died Monday , June 17, 2013. He was a native of Madison County and son of the late Earl Grey Jr. and Eula Duck Hill. He was also preceded in death by his wife Maxine Ballard Hill. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and employed by Micro-Switch Inc. Mr. Hill was a US Army Veteran.

He is survived by his daughter Darlene Hill Anderson of Mars Hill, sister Eloise Ferguson, nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

MARSHALL: Bessie Correll Ramsey 80, of 184 Katie’s Road passed away Saturday, June 22, 2013. She was a native of Madison County and daughter of the late Harrison and Kate Haney Correll. She is also preceded in death by her husband Ralph Ramsey and son Bobby Ray Moore.
Mrs. Ramsey is survived by a daughter Johnnie Ramsey; sons, Jerry Moore and Joseph Ramsey and a brother Bud Correll.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013 at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Rev. Jimmy Dean Hensley will officiate. Interment will follow in the Bowman Rector Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 4:00 –6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Blue Ridge Funeral Service.
